The new stage of restoration of the museum icebreaker will be paid for with grant money and agreed with the Russian Maritime Register.

The restoration of two rooms in the stern of the icebreaker Angara is planned for 2026–2027 using grant funds. The first stage began in 2021, when the decks, sides and some of the rooms were repaired; the second, from 2023, covered the museum’s main rooms, and the ship received lighting. Twenty-two million roubles from the regional budget were allocated for this work.

Because the icebreaker is a floating object, the work is agreed with the Russian classification society. The museum opened on the Angara on 31 March 1991 after two years of preliminary restoration; in the mid-1980s the ship had been partly sunk near the Irkutsk Reservoir. Since 2014 the icebreaker has belonged to the regional museum of local history.
