The Irkutsk police have detained a 33-year-old man who stole valuables from residents of the Kuibyshevsky District. After first cutting the telephone wires in an apartment building entrance, he called apartments and introduced himself as a telephone repairman.
Pretending to be fixing communication problems, the offender waited until the homeowners were distracted and stole expensive items.
A local resident from whom a wallet with money had been stolen in this way identified the suspect from the files. The identity of the “telephone repairman” was well known to the detectives, as he had already been taken to the police station more than once for petty thefts and robberies.
The detained man himself admitted his guilt for the acts committed, however officers do not rule out his involvement in other similar crimes.
At present, a criminal case has been opened under Part 2 of Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (theft with unlawful entry into a dwelling), and the issue of arrest is being decided.
Citizens affected by the suspect’s actions are asked by law enforcement to contact Police Department No. 6 of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Irkutsk by phone: 77-86-03; 21-36-00.
