In Irkutsk, Irkutskavtodor made 3,500 reflective smiley badges and will give them to first graders to make child pedestrians more visible and safer on the roads. Traffic police supported the campaign, reminding schoolchildren of street crossing rules and handing out reflectors to children, who attached them to their backpacks. The initiative is especially relevant amid alarming statistics, since the start of the year 130 children were injured in traffic accidents in the city, two died.

“The idea was born at the Road Safety Commission, which meets every month at the administration of the city of Irkutsk. Irkutskavtodor financed the production of ‘smileys’ with its own profits; they have a reflective coating. We made 3,500 of them and want to give them to first-graders. We hope this will help our schoolchildren feel safer on the roads,” said Radik Farazutdinov, director of the municipal enterprise Irkutskavtodor.
Grade 4 students were asked several important questions by traffic police inspectors today: how should you cross the road and where? what are traffic rules and who is required to follow them? To the delight of the adults, the schoolchildren answered all the questions correctly. And the flickers, which the guests handed to everyone present in the classroom, were immediately attached to their backpacks. As an option, traffic police officers recommended that the children attach the reflectors to their jackets, which would also make the little pedestrians more visible to motorists.
According to statistics, since the beginning of this year 130 children have been injured in road accidents, and two have died. Therefore, the traffic police always support campaigns that draw attention to little pedestrians and provide them with additional safety.
All of the flickers produced will be handed over by Irkutskavtodor to schools in Irkutsk so that they can later be distributed first and foremost to the youngest schoolchildren — first-graders.
