In Irkutsk, winter planting of fir trees was tried for the first time as part of compensatory greening. A tree was planted in Paris Commune Park and decorated for the New Year holidays this winter. Specialists say this practice is common worldwide and may prove effective, with final survival results by late summer. If successful, the method will be used across the city.
“This practice exists all over the world, including in Russia. It is effective because the tree is dormant in winter and the survival rate is high. By the end of summer, it will become clear how successful the experiment is. If everything goes well, we will apply the technology throughout the entire city,” explained Vladimir Chubuk, head of the Environmental Protection and Environmental Safety Department of the Housing and Communal Services Committee of the Irkutsk city administration. The spruce, which now grows in Paris Commune Park, was taken from the nursery of the municipal enterprise Gorzelenkhoz. Its specialists carried out the transplanting and will continue to care for the tree in the spring.
By the way, the winter planting of spruces in Irkutsk was carried out using extra-budgetary funds as part of compensatory landscaping. The experiment began with spruces specifically because New Year celebrations will take place around these trees in central recreation areas in the city districts. Thus, in Paris Commune Park, the newly planted spruce will be decorated with New Year ornaments that are taking part in the Sverdlovsky District competition for the best New Year’s toy. As the head of the district’s leisure organization department, Irina Stekacheva, said, a New Year’s performance for residents, organized by Deputy Dmitry Zhary, will take place here on December 25.
