Irkutsk region may become a site for a high tech technopark in the Baikal region. Governor Sergei Eroshchenko said the region has a strong scientific base, including the Irkutsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, leading universities, and a powerful computing cluster. The article also notes the growing number of IT companies and how combining academic, university, and applied science can form the basis of the future technopark.
The head of the region noted that Irkutsk Oblast is the most prepared site for creating a technopark in the field of high technologies in the Baikal region. The Governor reminded that, as part of the implementation of the instruction of the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, at least 30 industrial parks and technoparks are to be created in the country by 2018. Irkutsk Oblast is home to the Irkutsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the largest after Novosibirsk. The scientific base for creating a technopark in the field of high technologies can be based on the premises of Irkutsk State Technical University, Irkutsk State University, and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.- The creation of a technopark together with the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences will make it possible to more closely unite academic, university, and applied science, - the head of the region emphasized.
Sergey Eroshchenko also noted that one of the most powerful computing clusters in Russia is actively developing in Irkutsk Oblast on the basis of the Institute of System Dynamics and Control Theory of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which could become the technological base for forming a technopark. Every year, 15-20 IT companies are created in the region in the areas of informatization of the healthcare system, educational services, web programming, content processing in information networks, business management in various sectors of the national economy, and informatization of financial activities. Thus, the presence of projects in these areas will make it possible to form the backbone of a technopark in the field of high technologies.
