The Head of the Department for Physical Culture and Sports of the Irkutsk City Administration, Natalya Ivanova, noted: «The level and scale of these competitions are constantly growing. In the first Mayor’s Cup, only about thirty teams took part, and the games were held in one age group. In 2012, more than 40 teams applied in two age categories. This year, there were already 68 participating teams and three age groups. Moreover, the matches were often so fierce, and the players’ level so high, that the games ended in shootouts. It is obvious that the popularity of backyard hockey in Irkutsk is gaining momentum every year. And every year the administration pays more and more attention to organizing these competitions: in particular, if at the first Mayor’s Cup only three teams were awarded sports equipment, today we presented 9 sets to all prize winners in all age groups».
Officially, the 3rd Mayor’s Cup started on January 20, when applications were announced from everyone interested. Moreover, the organizers did not limit participants by territorial affiliation; in particular, this year not only Irkutsk teams, but also young hockey players from Karluk competed for the mayor’s awards. The qualifying matches started on January 27. They were mostly held on weekends or on weekdays, taking into account the players’ school schedules. The matches were held according to the standard rules established by the bandy federation.
