An exhibition dedicated to the history of sports in the Angara region has opened in Irkutsk, where visitors can learn about the region's most decorated athletes and its first female Olympic champions. Exhibits include rare photos, historic matches, medals of Natalia Ivanova and Galina Korzun, and a hall of fame with the names of 47 honored masters of sport.
«After becoming acquainted with the exhibition, one can learn that the most decorated athlete in the history of the Irkutsk Region was track and field athlete Nadezhda Chizhova, and the first Olympic champions were members of the women’s discus-throwing team, who brought back gold, silver, and bronze medals from Helsinki in 1952,» says the exhibition’s author, sports historian Alexander Shirshikov. At the exhibition, visitors can see photographs by Valery Orsoev, who captured most of the outstanding athletes of the Angara region, sports teams, mass bicycle races and runs, as well as some historic matches—for example, the 1983 speedway competitions. The exhibition also features the silver medal of Natalia Ivanova, won at the Sydney Olympics, and the medals of world shooting champion Galina Korzun. Among the exhibits is a board of honor listing the surnames of 47 honored masters of sport who at various times represented the Angara region in world-class competitions.
