Erast Butakov will tell Irkutsk residents about the legendary 73 day trek around Baikal, which he and doctor Vladimir Mikhailyuk made in 1992, becoming the first in the lake's history to cover 2000 km in one journey. The meeting will be devoted to memories that formed the basis of the book Around Baikal in 73 Days, where the travel diary conveys hardships, unexpected encounters, the beauty of Siberian nature and the feelings of the pioneers. This is a rare chance to hear a live account of a journey that became a test, a discovery and an important page of Baikal history.

In 1992, Erast Butakov and Vladimir Mikhailyuk, a doctor at the Irkutsk Regional Medical and Sports Dispensary, for the first time in the history of exploring Lake Baikal completed a 73-day trek around the lake in a single journey. In total, the travelers covered 2,000 km. Ten years later, Erast Butakov wrote the book "Around Baikal in 73 Days." The writer will share with Irkutsk residents at a meeting his memories and impressions of the thrilling journey that formed the basis of the book. The book is based on a trek diary that records each day of the journey, each in its own way unusual and unexpected.

The difficulties and obstacles that befell the pioneers, the risks and unexpected encounters, the severity of the Siberian taiga, overcoming personal weaknesses, a reassessment of life, a story of friendship, gratitude to the gods and ordinary people, and the vivid colors of nature they saw — all this and much more is presented by the author in his narrative with a sense of humor, self-criticism, and light sarcasm.
The meeting will take place at: 130th Quarter, 3rd of July St., 21. For more information, call 797-792.
