Alexander Zubkov and Alexey Negodaylo, representing the Irkutsk Region at the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, in a crew with Alexey Voyevoda and Dmitry Trunenkov won the gold medal in the four-man bobsleigh. The Russian quartet’s result was 3 minutes 40.6 seconds. The athletes recorded the best time throughout all four runs.
In second place was the Latvian team. Arvis Vilkaste, Daumants Dreiškens, Oskars Melbārdis and Jānis Strenga finished with a margin of just 0.09 seconds and secured Olympic silver for themselves.
The bronze medal went to the American bobsledders Steven Langton, Curtis Tomasevicz, Chris Fogt and Steven Holcomb. Their deficit to the leader was 0.39 seconds.
As a reminder, earlier in Sochi Alexander Zubkov and Alexey Voyevoda won the first gold in Russia’s Olympic history in two-man bobsleigh. The only other time domestic bobsledders won the top Olympic award was in 1988 in Calgary. Then Yannis Kipurs and Vladimir Kozlov won the two-man event.
