The Defense Ministry announced the completion of a new army uniform design that should radically change the look of Russian servicemen over the next three years. The project, created with top designers led by Valentin Yudashkin, focuses on modern materials, comfort, and clothing for different climates, from light summer gear to warmer winter wear. It will also replace familiar equipment, kirza boots, foot wraps, and high caps, with the past.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Defense announced the completion of the development of a new army uniform. Over the next three years, its appearance will change dramatically. The introduction of the new uniform implies not only the use of the most modern technologies and materials, but also the creation of maximum comfort.
The new uniform for the Armed Forces began to be developed on the initiative of Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov in accordance with the decree of the President of the Russian Federation of October 18, 2007. Specialists from the Ministry of Defense, together with leading Russian fashion designers headed by Valentin Yudashkin, took part in its development. In a relatively short time, samples of all types of military uniforms were created: dress, everyday, field, as well as clothing for special units (including those serving as part of the relatively recently created mountain rifle brigades).
And significant changes are ahead.
Thus, on the feet of a Russian serviceman there will now be soft leather boots with antibacterial insoles, rather than kirza boots. Boots will remain only for the honor guard, but even they will be chrome boots. Puttees - a symbol of many army generations - will also become a relic of the past.
Headgear will also change - the crowns of caps, which have grown excessively over the past two decades, will once again become smaller. According to Yudashkin, when designing the cap, Zhukov's headgear was taken as the basis, and at that time the desire to raise the crown as much as possible was considered bad form, characteristic of the armies of Latin American states.
Samples of the new military uniform were developed with the different climate zones in which servicemen of the Russian Army serve in mind. For hot regions, a lightweight version has been developed, intended for wear by all categories of servicemen. The suit is made in light blue and consists of a straight-cut jacket, trousers, shorts, and a baseball cap. The entire uniform will be sewn from fabric with a membrane based on nanotechnology. These fabrics let moisture through only “outward”: sweat passes to the surface, but does not get back under the clothing. And under this fabric, on the serviceman’s body, there will be thermal underwear, also specially developed with military needs in mind.
The serviceman’s winter coat will become warmer. For example, the wool coat for officers is sewn from drape and broadcloth with 90 percent wool content. The women’s version of the winter uniform is made from 100 percent wool, while the material is significantly lighter.
The state has also separately taken care of naval personnel. "Specifically for representatives of the Navy, taking into account modern global experience, a special warm suit (jacket and trousers) of a unified design and appearance has been developed, made of synthetic water-resistant fabric and a removable lining of natural fur or synthetic material," say the Ministry of Defense.
The new military uniform will be significantly more expensive than the one currently in use. According to preliminary estimates, the cost of the new uniform is 2-3 times higher than the current one. But the country will have no reason to be ashamed of its heroes.
