In Irkutsk, applications closed for the Million for Good Deeds contest, which has supported socially important citizen initiatives for many years. This year 170 projects were submitted, from yard improvements and street mini libraries to theater shows for children and sports initiatives. Winners will be announced in early September, and 120 authors of the best ideas will receive financial support from the city budget.

On August 12, the submission of projects for the “Million for Good Deeds” contest was completed. The winners will be announced in the first days of September.
The “Million for Good Deeds” contest has been held by the administration of the city of Irkutsk since 2013. Its goal is to support socially significant projects implemented by Irkutsk residents in the city during the current year. Last year, 207 applications were submitted by residents; this year, 170.
In each of the city’s four administrative districts, six winners will be selected. They will be named by members of the contest commissions, which will include employees of the district administrations, the MBU “CITY,” and members of the Public Chamber. In total, 120 people will be awarded in the city. They will receive financial support from the Irkutsk budget. The prize is 15,000 rubles for first place, 10,000 rubles for second place, and 5,000 rubles for third place.
As specialists from the city administration’s public relations department said, this year the contest has five categories: “The Heritage of the City of Irkutsk,” “A Cozy City,” “Healthy Generation,” “Barrier-Free Irkutsk,” and “Irkutsk for Children.”
Among the contestants are projects for improving a courtyard (“For Our Beloved Children,” author Alexey Astafyev), and for staging theatrical performances at venues of orphanages, hospitals, and schools (“Theater for Children,” author Olga Shmidgal). Tatyana Maksoeva presented a project for free book exchange among Irkutsk residents based on a street mini-library (“Library in a Telephone Booth”), and Olesya Moshkovich presented one for organizing workouts with experienced instructors, attracting new participants to sports, and expanding the pull-up bar facilities for sports in her district (“Workout”).
This year, the number of projects submitted to the contest in the “Heritage of the City of Irkutsk” category increased to 39. They are related to preserving Irkutsk’s heritage and popularizing its history.
