Russia is developing anti satellite weapons in response to US and Chinese tests, said Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popovkin. Moscow says it opposes placing any weapons in space. The article also recalls the 2007 Chinese test and the 2008 US launch, which caused international concern.

The day before, the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation for Armaments, Army General Vladimir Popovkin, stated that Russia is developing anti-satellite weapons. Such developments are being carried out in connection with similar actions by other states.
At a press conference, Vladimir Popovkin said that Russia cannot remain indifferent when the United States and China conduct tests of weapons capable of destroying satellites in orbit. According to Vladimir Popovkin, work on creating similar weapons is also under way in Russia, but at the same time the Russian side opposes the deployment of any weapons in space.
Recall that in 2007 Chinese military forces shot down one of their own satellites with a missile. The international community regarded these actions as tests of space weapons. In February 2008, the United States carried out similar actions, which also caused concern. Before that, the last tests of the capabilities of missiles for destroying orbital spacecraft were conducted by the United States back in 1985.
