In Irkutsk, centerline road markings will be applied with thermoplastic for the first time. An extra 10 million rubles was allocated from the city budget. Officials expect the new technology to last longer and be more visible at night due to a stronger reflective effect. The markings are planned for several main streets by the end of September.

This technology is being used in Irkutsk for the first time. An additional 10 million rubles has been allocated from the city budget for applying centerline markings with thermoplastic.
“For us, this is a kind of experiment. We will see how the thermoplastic holds up over the course of a year,” commented Bulat Dugarov, Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Committee for Urban Development of the Irkutsk City Administration. “Center lines will be applied on the city’s main streets. The main advantage of this road marking method is its longer service life.”
According to GOST, thermoplastic must last for one year. Conditions for working with thermoplastic: dry weather, temperatures from +5 to +25 degrees.
“The technology is not simple: it is a multi-stage technological process that consists, first and foremost, of preparing the material—heating it properly, achieving a certain consistency; this requires a high level of specialist training. The application process itself involves high temperatures and fairly complex technological equipment. We will assess all the quality characteristics of the markings on the city streets,” said Alexey Kryuk, director of the contractor company.
The new markings also have a more pronounced reflective effect, so they will be more visible on city highways at night.
Center lines with thermoplastic will be applied on the following streets: Surnova, Barrikad, Rabochego Shtaba, Nizhnyaya Naberezhnaya, Irkutny Bridge, Mayakovsky, Sergeyev, Argunov, Sedov, Sovetskaya, Baikalskaya (from the hydroelectric dam to Rzhanov). The work must be completed by the end of September.
