From September 6 to 7, Irkutsk will host the VII annual super marathon of martial arts “Banzai - Weekend.” The event is organized by the Department of Physical Culture, Sports and Youth Policy of the Irkutsk City Administration.
“Banzai - Weekend” will take place in the square near the monument to Alexander III. Over the course of 24 hours, representatives of seven martial arts disciplines (kyokushinkai, aikido, traditional karate, shotokan, kudo, wushu, and kendo) will hold matches. The marathon will involve about 250 participants from the cities of Irkutsk, Shelekhov, Angarsk, and Usolye-Sibirskoye.
Participation in the marathon allows athletes to test their strength and meet fighters representing different martial arts styles. In addition, the marathon as a whole promotes martial arts.
In 2010, a record was set at this marathon - 10,000 matches in 24 hours.
