Rospotrebnadzor advises Irkutsk residents not to swim near the Angara icebreaker. The water there shows strong bacterial contamination, indicating recent fecal pollution. Tests found some city water samples fail hygiene standards, and in some places microbiological levels are many times over the limit. Swimming in Irkutsk is allowed only at Yakobi beach, which is deemed safe.
Rospotrebnadzor does not advise Irkutsk residents to swim near the icebreaker "Angara." An excess of TKB bacteria, indicating recent fecal contamination of the water, has been recorded in the river.Epidemiologists conducted water quality tests of the region’s bodies of water in recreation areas and swimming areas. The samples do not meet hygienic standards. Specialists passed this information on to the municipalities, including the administration of Irkutsk.
In the city, water quality monitoring was carried out at seven monitoring points: Irkutsk Reservoir - recreation area near the icebreaker "Angara"; Irkutsk Reservoir - Yakobi Bay; Angara River - Yunost Island; Angara River - bay, Yunost Island; Angara River - lower pool of the dam, square; Angara River - Bokovskaya Channel; Irkut River - Gorky settlement.
As noted in the press service of Rospotrebnadzor, in June 2015 the laboratory of the Federal Budgetary Healthcare Institution "Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Irkutsk Region" examined 13 water samples from bodies of water in Irkutsk for microbiological indicators; 38.5% of them (five samples) did not meet hygienic standards for microbiological indicators. Bacterial contamination of the water in several bodies of water in Irkutsk is assessed as epidemiologically dangerous and poses a threat of infectious disease outbreaks among the population.
The maximum exceedance of hygienic standards in June 2015 was recorded in the Irkutsk Reservoir near the icebreaker "Angara" (a 25-fold exceedance of thermotolerant coliform bacteria (TCB) — these belong to the sanitary-indicative group of microorganisms and indicate recent fecal contamination of the water). In addition, there was also a fivefold exceedance for coliform bacteria (CB).
In the Bokovskaya Channel - a 6.4-fold exceedance for TCB, a 4.2-fold exceedance for CB. In the Angara Bay (Yunost Island) - a 1.2-fold exceedance for CB, a 1.4-fold exceedance for TCB.
"Based on the results of the water studies obtained, in order to ensure the sanitary and epidemiological well-being of the population and prevent the occurrence of infectious and mass non-infectious diseases, the administration of Irkutsk has been asked to take measures to prohibit the use of the specified water bodies for swimming. Appropriate signs need to be installed. It is also necessary to carry out the required measures to ensure proper sanitary conditions in the territory adjacent to places of mass recreation for the population, eliminate dumps, and stop the discharge of untreated and unneutralized wastewater into the city’s water bodies," the press service of the regional Rospotrebnadzor Administration reported.
Irkutsk residents, swimming is allowed only in the Yakobi beach area. There are many bodies of water in the city near which recreation is permitted, but they are not intended for swimming.
Employees of the GIMS of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the Irkutsk Region signed an act recognizing the Yakobi beach area and its water area as meeting safety standards on June 1, 2015.
