In Irkutsk, traffic police continue large scale raids against drunk drivers. On July 17, 11 motorists were detained drunk, and accidents involving them were avoided. Police remind that drunk driving brings heavy fines and license loss, and since July 1 criminal liability has been tightened for repeat offenders. The report also explains the terms for repeat drunk driving and fatal crashes caused by a drunk driver.

Traffic police officers continue raids on the city’s roads; over the past 24 hours on July 17, police detained 11 drivers in a state of alcohol intoxication. As a result of traffic police checks over the past day, not a single accident involving intoxicated drivers was allowed in Irkutsk. This was reported by the press service of the regional Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Police are carrying out vehicle inspections to identify persons driving vehicles while intoxicated. Traffic police officers are focused on identifying drivers who commit such violations, as well as bringing them to administrative responsibility.
Traffic police officers note that many car owners, despite strict administrative measures, continue to ignore traffic rules.
Every day, 150 traffic police crews conduct inspections on the city’s roads, 40 of them in the regional center.
We remind you that driving a car while intoxicated is punishable by an administrative fine of 30,000 rubles and deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a period of 1.5 to 2 years.
Meanwhile, since July 1, criminal liability for driving a car while drunk has appeared in Russian legislation. A criminal case can be opened against those drivers who are caught by traffic police officers drunk for the second time. Such drivers will face imprisonment for up to 2 years. But there is a choice - a fine of 200,000 to 300,000 rubles or compulsory labor.
It will also be possible to go to prison for drunk driving if police officers stop a drunk driver within a year after the return of their license for a similar traffic violation.
The changes will also affect the punishment for a fatal traffic accident in which a drunk driver is found guilty. The legislation introduces a minimum prison term for such a motorist - 2 years. If two or more people die in the accident, the lower limit of the punishment will be 4 years, and the upper limit will be 9 years.
