Despite tougher penalties, Irkutsk drivers keep getting behind the wheel drunk. In July alone, inspectors filed reports against 280 motorists. Four now face criminal liability for repeat drunk driving under the new article of the Russian Criminal Code. Since the start of the year, 1500 drunk drivers have been detained in Irkutsk, though the offense carries a large fine and license suspension.

Even despite the tightening of penalties for drunk driving, Irkutsk drivers continue to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
In July, traffic police officers in Irkutsk drew up administrative reports for driving a vehicle while intoxicated against 280 drivers. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for Irkutsk. Four drivers will be held criminally liable for repeat drunk driving under Article 264.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, “Violation of traffic rules by a person subjected to administrative punishment” (recall that this type of punishment was introduced only on July 1).
In total, since the beginning of 2015, traffic police inspectors have detained 1,500 motorists on the city’s roads who were driving under the influence of alcohol. And this despite the fact that, in accordance with the Code of Administrative Offenses, violators face a fine of 30,000 rubles and deprivation of the right to drive a car for a period of one and a half to two years.
