In Russia, a second case of A H1N1 flu was detected. A man returned to Kaluga region from the Dominican Republic with his wife. He is in hospital, his wife and several relatives are under observation, with no symptoms. The first Russian virus strain has also been isolated for possible vaccine development.

In Russia, a second case of influenza A(H1N1) has been identified. A man living in the Kaluga Region returned from the Dominican Republic. As Gennady Onishchenko told Vesti, the man himself sought medical help at one of Kaluga’s medical facilities on May 20, since he had developed a fever on May 19. After returning from the Dominican Republic on May 18, he successfully passed thermal screening.
The ill man was in the city of Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) from May 7 to May 18 together with his wife. He was examined, placed under medical observation, and samples were sent to the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor in Moscow. The tests confirmed infection with influenza A (H1N1).
The wife of the patient has been placed under medical observation and shows no signs of illness. At present, the man’s health condition is satisfactory, and he is receiving the necessary treatment. Both the infected man and his wife are now in a hospital in Kaluga. In addition, according to Gennady Onishchenko, four relatives who had contact with the patient have also been placed under medical observation. "They show no signs of acute respiratory infection," said the Chief State Sanitary Doctor of the Russian Federation.
Gennady Onishchenko also clarified that there is no need to screen the passengers on the flight on which the patient traveled, since he arrived in Russia healthy and fell ill only on the second day. "But we do have the lists of those passengers, and in accordance with international requirements, of course, we will not screen the entire plane, only the two rows in front of him and the two rows behind him. We will inquire about the health of these people," said the head of Rospotrebnadzor. In his opinion, given that the passengers arrived on May 18 and today is the 25th, "the maximum incubation period has already passed."
So far, only one case of "swine flu" has been registered in Russia. He recently flew in from America and felt unwell in Moscow. He is a 28-year-old Russian who arrived from New York, where he had been working under contract as a university lecturer.
He is recovering and may be discharged from the First Clinical Infectious Diseases Hospital as early as Monday, said Dmitry Lvov, director of the Ivanovsky Institute of Virology, on Sunday.
From this patient, specialists at the institute managed to isolate the first strain of influenza A(H1N1) virus in Russia, and now they have legal grounds to use it for vaccine production.
