Dmitry Glukhovsky presented in Irkutsk his new book Metro 2035, the final part of the trilogy about human survival in the Moscow metro after a nuclear disaster.
Science fiction writer Dmitry Glukhovsky presented his new book “Metro 2035,” the final part of the trilogy about how a handful of people survive in the catacombs of the Moscow metro after a nuclear catastrophe. On August 22, he met with readers in Irkutsk. More than a hundred guests gathered in the bookstore hall, most of them, of course, young people. In their hands they held the entire trilogy; some had already managed to read the last part.
On August 21, Dmitry held a similar meeting in Angarsk, and on August 23 the writer will arrive in Krasnoyarsk.
-But Krasnoyarsk may not get me; I’ll completely lose my voice, - Dmitry Glukhovsky joked. And he asked for tea with lemon. – And first, let’s take a photo and post it on Instagram.
The first book was published 10 years ago, and Dmitry did not plan to turn it into a trilogy. But the story turned out to be so popular that a computer game was created based on the book.
Here is what Dmitry Glukhovsky says about the new book:
-For the main character Artyom, two years have passed, and for me and the whole country - 10 years. You can’t step into the same river twice, but that was not the goal I set for myself. And the task was quite difficult. On the one hand, to return to where it all began, but to look at the situation with different eyes, through the eyes of a person who has grown up, understood a lot, and become disillusioned. “Metro 2035” answers all the questions of the first book. In terms of tone, the book is different; it has become harsher, and it even carries an 18+ label.
The writer says that his next books will not be fantasy. He is thinking of writing a play about Stalin, a crime drama-thriller, and something like “Marquez on Russian folk soil.” If a young writer sometimes only needs imagination to write a novel, then to create a mature realistic work, one must gain experience.
When asked whether Dmitry wanted his trilogy to be adapted for the screen, he answered with complete honesty:
-I would like that, but only if it were not a Russian film. “Metro” itself is a very expensive story, one that cannot be recouped in our box office. Films where Misha Galustyan plays Carlson will pay for themselves, but “Metro” will not.
But even among Hollywood actors: Colin Farrell, Hugh Jackman, and other stars, no worthy candidate for the roles of Artyom and Hunter, the main characters of the books, was found.
The writer spoke with the guests for more than two hours and managed to discuss with the audience not only books and cinema, but also politics and contemporary Russian realities.
Let us remind you that Dmitry Glukhovsky is not visiting our city for the first time. In 2013, he had already honored our city with his attention.
The writer asked that all photos taken at the meeting be posted on social media with the hashtag #metro2035.
