The Irkutsk Regional Court upheld the decision to detain Yulia Kiseleva, the culprit of the fatal crash on Baikalskaya Street, until September 27. Lawyers appealed, citing serious injuries and a young daughter, but the court did not change the measure of restraint. The article also describes the tragedy in which two men died, and the criminal penalty the accused faces.
The Irkutsk Regional Court left unchanged the decision of the Oktyabrsky District Court to place the culprit of the accident on Baikalskaya Street in custody for 2 months. Yulia Kiseleva (Eseva) will remain in custody until September 27. A court hearing was held on August 24.On August 7, the girl was arrested, however Yulia’s human rights advocates filed an appeal with the Irkutsk Regional Court against the Oktyabrsky District Court’s decision to place her in custody. The lawyers based the appeal on the fact that Yulia Kiseleva has serious injuries, and also has a young daughter.
Recall that the accident, which claimed the lives of two men, occurred on July 27 of this year. The daughter of Irkutsk deputy Zhanna Eseva got behind the wheel while intoxicated; the amount of alcohol in her blood was 12 times the legal limit. At a speed of about 160 km/h, Kiseleva’s Mercedes-Benz crashed into a Toyota Highlander that had stopped at a traffic light, and the Toyota in the oncoming lane crashed into two more cars. The impact was so strong that those sitting in the car had virtually no chance of surviving.
A criminal case has been opened over the traffic accident under Part 6 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (violation of traffic rules and vehicle operation committed by a person in a state of intoxication, negligently causing the death of two or more persons). The culprit of the fatal accident faces 4 to 9 years in prison.
On July 29, Zhanna Eseva submitted a resignation letter, emphasizing that she does not accept claims that her deputy status could hinder the investigation.
“I am a mother, and I will help my daughter in this difficult situation, but I do not accept speculation that my deputy status could hinder an objective and fair investigation,” she emphasized.
Yulia Kiseleva’s parents expressed condolences to the relatives and loved ones of the men who died in the accident.
