Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov and Russian Railways management congratulated IrGUPS students on the start of the school year and discussed the universitys role as a science and innovation center in Eastern Siberia. They also discussed transport development strategy, modernization of the Trans-Siberian Railway and BAM, and training in demand specialists for the industry. Best teachers received awards, and the university marks its 40th anniversary this year.

Russia’s Minister of Transport Maxim Sokolov, together with OAO Russian Railways Vice President Alexey Vorotilkin and East Siberian Railway head Vasily Frolov, visited Irkutsk State University of Railway Engineering on September 1 and congratulated students on the start of the academic year.
The head of the East Siberian Railway noted that IrGUPS is a center of science and innovation in Eastern Siberia and has a highly qualified faculty. He highlighted the university’s scientific and technical potential, which, in his view, can be applied not only in the railway transport sector, but also in many other sectors of the economy.
Maxim Sokolov told the university’s students and faculty about the country’s transport development strategy. He outlined two paths for the development of the transport industry: innovative and conservative. Both are aimed at forming a unified transport space. This will be facilitated by the development of transport logistics and public-private partnership.
In turn, Vasily Frolov said that it is precisely these tasks that Russian Railways and the East Siberian Railway as its branch are now addressing by developing customer services for shippers and the transport and logistics network, as well as implementing a large-scale project to modernize the Trans-Siberian and Baikal-Amur mainlines.
As reported by the East Siberian Railway press service, at the meeting Frolov presented departmental awards to the university’s best professors. He noted that this year IrGUPS entered the top ten universities in the Siberian Federal District whose graduates are most in demand on the labor market. In the new academic year, the university will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its founding.
In total, there are 30 educational institutions in the East Siberian Railway’s area of activity, including six boarding schools at the stations of Tankhoy, Ulan-Ude, Slyudyanka, Tayshet, Vikhorevka, Nizhneudinsk, Severobaikalsk (branch), and Lyceum No. 36, located in Irkutsk. More than four thousand children study in 23 departmental preschool institutions.
