On September 22, Irkutsk drivers are asked to give up their cars for one day and use public transport, bicycles, and walking. The campaign began in England in 1997 and spread worldwide to highlight problems caused by too many cars. In Russia, it is held with support from the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation as part of European Mobility Week and World Car Free Day.
Every year on September 22, Irkutsk drivers are invited to give up using their personal vehicles for one day in favor of public transport, bicycles, and walking. Background: this idea was born in England in 1997, and a year later the campaign was held in France. At that time, only about twenty cities observed this day. However, by 2001, more than a thousand cities in 35 countries around the world had officially joined the movement. Understanding that in modern conditions it is simply impossible to completely give up cars, city leaders and heads of various organizations want to remind citizens of the problems associated with the large number of vehicles.
In Russia, the campaign is held with the support of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation as part of the European Mobility Week and “World Car Free Day.”
