On November 26, on the eve of Mother’s Day, the Irkutsk Regional State Universal Scientific Library named after I.I. Molchanov-Sibirsky is holding a charity event, “The Legal Field of a Large Family.”
The charity event is timed to coincide with the annual holiday, Mother’s Day, which will be celebrated on November 30.
The celebration of Mother’s Day goes back centuries. The ancient Greeks paid tribute to the mother of all gods, Gaia. The Romans dedicated three days in March (from the 22nd to the 25th) to another mother of the gods, the eastern Cybele. For the Celts, Mother’s Day was the day honoring the goddess Brigid.
From the 17th to the 19th century, “Mothering Sunday” was observed in Great Britain. Mother’s Day, the equivalent of the modern holiday, originated in the 19th century in the American state of West Virginia. Like many holidays celebrated today in Germany, Mother’s Day has ancient roots. Similar traditions are also known in the provinces of Champagne (France) and Wallonia (Belgium).
In Russia, by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of January 30, 1998, the holiday of Mother’s Day was established, and it is celebrated on the last Sunday in November. This holiday is intended to raise the social significance of motherhood and unite all segments of Russian society around the ideals of kindness and reverence for women-mothers. In connection with the upcoming holiday, the I.I. Molchanov-Sibirsky Library is holding a charity event for large families in the city of Irkutsk
