On Olkhon, forest rangers caught a bear that swam across Lake Baikal, fleeing forest fires and wandered for days in search of food. It was lured near Khuzhir and will be taken to the mainland and released safely.

A predatory beast that swam across Lake Baikal, presumably from the Ongur forestry district, has been caught by forest rangers. As a reminder, the bear, fleeing forest fires, became a danger to the residents and tourists of Olkhon Island. For seven days, the clubfoot wandered in search of food.
As part of the operation, the animal was caught on fish bait two kilometers from Khuzhir.
- The bear has been captured; it will be taken to the mainland and released. Transportation will be carried out in a special cage by ferry, - the press service of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Reserved Pribaikalsky” reports.
The animal will be accompanied by a specialist mammalogist, a rapid-response team of the national park, and police officers armed with weapons.
Reserve staff report that they are not conducting any fundraising for the capture of bears. Everything is being done exclusively with their own resources.
- Just a week ago, when bear tracks were discovered, we contacted the K-9 kennel so that they would assign their specialist to capture the animal. They billed us 50,000 rubles. We do not have that kind of money, and we decided to take on the burden of responsibility ourselves. At that time, scammers took advantage of the situation and apparently began collecting funds for the capture of bears, - the reserve says. – We are now negotiating with the K-9 kennel so that they provide a specialist to carry out the proper transportation of the bear.
In addition to the large male, fleeing the fires and searching for food, a female bear with a cub also wandered onto the island. Their search is currently underway.
