In central Irkutsk, the Irkutsk Quarters project is planned. On 43 hectares, 11 blocks with shops, hotels and restaurants will appear, while housing will be preserved and residents will not be evicted. The project will start in the former Shanghai district, and the first visible changes will be seen in the next 2 to 3 years.
The “Irkutsk Quarters” project will be implemented in the regional center. According to the architects’ plans, 11 blocks will be located on 43 hectares of land in the very center of Irkutsk. They will occupy the area from the 130th Quarter along Timiryazeva Street to Karl-Libknekht Street, and will also affect Gornaya Street. There, retail outlets, hotels, and restaurants will be created, while residential development will be preserved. No one will be evicted from their homes.- The working title of this project, you have probably heard, is “Trade Axis,” says Sergey Mayarenkov, a member of the Public Chamber of the city of Irkutsk. - But we changed it to “Irkutsk Quarters” in order to avoid the fate of the 130th Quarter, which is named after the quarter number in the master plan.
The authorities discussed the project with the homeowners. And many of them are already ready to take part in it. The starting point of the “Irkutsk Quarters” will be the area of the former “Shanghai Market,” and Irkutsk residents will see the first changes in its appearance in the next 2-3 years.
