In the Irkutsk region, police recorded a new fraud scheme in which criminals promise to return money to victims of MMM, then extort large sums from them under the pretext of paying tax. A 61 year old woman from Ust Ilimsk transferred money to scammers for months, hoping to get the supposed 4 million rubles. In the end she lost almost a million rubles, and the scammers stopped contacting her.
In the Irkutsk Region, law enforcement agencies have recorded a new type of fraudulent activity related to the theft of money through deception and abuse of citizens’ trust.A woman filed a report with the police duty station in the city of Ust-Ilimsk. The victim said that as a result of fraud she had lost all her savings.
When establishing the details of what happened, police found that back in the summer the applicant had received a call on her phone from an unknown man. During the conversation, the stranger said that he represented a corporation that compensates losses to citizens affected by the actions of the well-known financial pyramid scheme “MMM.”
To the caller’s luck, the 61-year-old woman had indeed lost money in this way many years ago. Then the man “delighted” his interlocutor by saying that over the years, with interest, she had accumulated about 4 million rubles. But to receive the money, the client needed to pay a tax.
Over several months of communication, the victim diligently transferred money to the accounts of the criminals, who managed to keep the victim on the “hook.” In the last conversation, the fraudsters assured the pensioner that the money would be credited to her account within a day. After waiting for the appointed day but not receiving the long-awaited transfer, the elderly woman tried to contact the scammers. However, the subscriber’s phone number was blocked, and only then did she realize that she had been deceived. In total, the victim gave the criminals almost one million rubles.
