In the Irkutsk region, preliminary yearly results were summed up, birth rate rose by 9 percent, and mortality declined, though deaths still slightly exceed births. In 11 months, 34.8 thousand children were registered, but the number of single mothers rose and marriages fell by almost 5 percent. Also, registry offices are building an electronic database to speed up access to birth, death, and marital status records.

Birth rates increased, and mortality decreased. The Civil Registry Office of the Irkutsk Region has summed up the preliminary results of this year.
Over 11 months, 34,800 newborns were registered in the Angara region. That is 9%, or almost three thousand children, more than last year. Registry office employees call the trend toward an increase in the number of single mothers negative. Another unfavorable indicator is that the number of marriages has decreased. Compared with last year, by almost 5%. Representatives of the civil registry service believe this is explained by people’s superstitiousness — in a leap year, significantly fewer people want to start a family. An electronic database is now being formed in all registry offices. This will make it possible to obtain this or that information about a person’s birth, death, or marital status more promptly when processing various documents.
- Mortality has decreased, it is hard to believe, by 574%, considering that last year mortality was higher than birth rates. Mortality, over this period alone, exceeds birth rates by 135 people, - said Boris Panafidin, head of the Civil Registry Office of the Irkutsk Region.
