A bronze bust of Governor General Mikhail Speransky was delivered to Irkutsk, and will be installed in the square at the intersection of Zhelyabov and Sukhe Bator streets. The over four meter monument was made from the sketch of the contest winners, and its original will appear near the Angara hotel in warm weather. The bust installation history dates back to 2004 and was accompanied by debates over the names of the square and streets.

A bronze bust of Governor-General Mikhail Speransky has been delivered to Irkutsk. The monument to the statesman and political figure of the early 19th century will be installed in the square at the intersection of Zhelyabov and Sukhe-Bator streets.
The monument on a pedestal with a total height of more than four meters was made according to a sketch by the winners of the creative competition held in September last year.
The winners were Alexander Abramov, Alexander Vinogradov, Maya Kirillova, and Vladimir Akulov.
Based on the submitted project, an original was made, which will be installed near the Angara Hotel in the warm season. This was reported by the press service of the administration.
The issue of installing the monument has been raised since 2004. There was even a proposal to rename the city streets and return Kirov Square to its pre-revolutionary name, “M. M. Speransky Square.”
This proposal was received ambiguously by the public. As a result, it was decided to create Mikhail Speransky Square with the installation of a bust at the intersection of Sukhe-Bator and Zhelyabov streets.
The location for the bust was approved in January last year by the architectural and artistic section of the Urban Planning Council under the administration of Irkutsk.
