In Irkutsk, the traveling puppet theater Divo will stage the nativity play Bethlehem Star at Sukachev Manor on December 26 and January 8. The fairy tale style production tells the biblical story through original puppets and recreates the atmosphere of old Christmas Irkutsk, understandable to children from 4 years old and adults. Of special interest is the nativity box itself, a hand puppet box where sacred scenes intertwine with comic everyday episodes.

In Irkutsk, the traveling puppet theater “Divo” will present the nativity play “The Star of Bethlehem” at the Sukachev Estate on December 26 of this year and January 8, 2016. According to the estate’s press service, as the head of the “Divo” theater, Vladimir Gorobets, said, this performance is an opportunity to recreate the atmosphere of old Irkutsk through entertainment that in former times captivated all residents during the Christmas holidays—young and old alike.
The performance “The Star of Bethlehem” is a biblical story told by three professional actors through puppets in an accessible fairy-tale form. This format will be understandable to children from age 4 and will interest adults.
The performance features various puppets—an angel, shepherds, the Magi bringing gifts, King Herod, the inconsolable mother Rachel, and many others. All of them are attached to wire and move along the lines of slits in the stage. The puppets are original works, made by the theater staff after a detailed study of the costumes and character types of those times. The nativity scene in the performance is a handmade puppet box. It is divided in two: the upper part contains the world of the saints, the lower part—the secular world. The design of the box determined the fact that spiritual scenes in the nativity play are combined with everyday comic stories.
