Reference: In Ancient Rome, Hedgehog Day was celebrated on February 2. The weather forecast was based on the behavior of a hedgehog awakened on this day, which either saw or did not see its shadow. The peoples of Western Europe, including Italy itself, preserved this tradition in later periods as well. In northern Germany, for example, from which settlers populated Pennsylvania, a badger would awaken at this time. In North America, where neither hedgehogs nor badgers lived, the role of such a natural weather forecaster passed to the groundhog. And thus the world-famous Groundhog Day was born thanks to the film of the same name.
