On February 21, a Toyota Voxy fell through the ice on Lake Baikal. There were two adults and a child in the vehicle. Only the 39-year-old driver managed to survive. His companion and her 9-year-old daughter died.“A report that a Toyota Voxy had broken through the ice in Mukhor Bay near Ulirba Cape was received at 17:50. According to the injured man, he drove onto the ice and headed toward the tourist base. 20 meters from the shore, he saw marker poles and decided that this was the recreation base’s territory and deliberately drove past them. The car instantly went under the ice, since the marker poles indicated a dangerous area. The depth at the site of the breakthrough is two meters,” said Mikhail Grudinin, senior state inspector for small vessels at the Malomorsky inspection unit.
At present, employees of the Sakhyurta search and rescue unit of the Baikal search and rescue team of the Russian Emergencies Ministry and State Inspectorate for Small Vessels inspectors are at the scene.
In total, six people became victims of the Small Sea in 2016, the press service of the Main Directorate of the Russian Emergencies Ministry for the Irkutsk Region clarifies.
