In Irkutsk, three concept options for the citys spatial development until 2040 were presented, worked on by architects from Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Irkutsk. Specialists have already defined key principles and priorities, and proposed solutions for transport, utilities, public spaces, and the natural recreational framework. The final concept is planned to be chosen by May 2016, and it will form the basis of the citys master plan.
At the first session on developing the concept of the city’s spatial development through 2040, architects proposed three projects for the development of the regional center. At the initiative of the city mayor’s office and commissioned by the ANO “Irkutsk Quarters,” documents on the current use of the territory were analyzed. To date, the main principles, priorities, and directions of the city’s spatial development have been defined. This was reported by the mayor’s office press service.
Development teams from the Moscow General Plan Institute, the Urbanica Institute of Territorial Planning (St. Petersburg), and the Irkutsk branch of the Union of Architects of Russia worked on the projects.
As part of developing the concept options, specialists assessed the priorities of socio-economic development and prepared proposals for the spatial organization of Irkutsk and the surrounding areas.
Proposals were also drawn up for the development of the transport network, utility infrastructure, the natural and recreational framework, and public spaces.
- It is very important that we met today and discussed the results of the specialists’ work. Overall, the groups of architects identified roughly the same “pain points” in Irkutsk, while proposing different ways to address the city’s problems and further develop our territory. There will be more detailed discussions to follow, including with the public, - noted the mayor of Irkutsk.
By May 2016, the final version of the concept for the city’s spatial development will be determined. It will become the basis for Irkutsk’s master plan.
