The Irkutsk team “Yunost-Monretrans” won the Governor’s Cup in bandy. In the final, the players of this team defeated their fellow townsmen from “Baikal-Energiya.” In total, eight hockey teams took part in the tournament, made up of athletes born in 2004-2005.The final, which took place in Shelekhov, ended with a score of 4:1. Governor Sergey Levchenko presented the tournament cup to the winners. Today, teams from the north of the Irkutsk region will determine the winner of the same trophy in Ust-Ilimsk.
“When we started 10 years ago, the Governor’s Cup was held only in Irkutsk. Now the scope of the competition is much broader, the teams are preparing much more seriously for the tournament, and as a result, more and more boys are taking up sports,” said Vladimir Matienko, president of the Irkutsk Region bandy federation.
Sergey Levchenko, Governor of the Irkutsk Region:
– Despite the fact that Shelekhov is a fairly young city, it has very good sporting traditions, which the people of Shelekhov can be proud of. In particular, boxing and cycling are well developed in the city; participants in the Paralympic and Olympic Games have grown up here. And the fact that Shelekhov is a sports city was confirmed by today’s tournament. We were pleased to watch the young hockey players who showed a very good game. The glorious traditions of bandy are very well supported in the Irkutsk region, and we have such a tournament, already a jubilee one, the tenth in a row. After all, the first tournament was held back when today’s participants had only just been born! I would like to congratulate not only the winners, but all the participants of the tournament, and I hope that when the boys grow up, they will win not only in Russian championship matches, but also at the World Championship.
On March 3, boys will enter the fight for the Governor’s Cup (three are awarded in total); these competitions will take place in Ust-Kut, and adult teams will compete in the regional center from March 11 to 13.
