Yesterday, a meeting of the board of the Irkutsk Region Prosecutor’s Office was held. It summed up the results of work on strengthening legality and law and order in 2008 and outlined the priority tasks in the near future. The regional prosecutor, Igor Melnikov, said that the Irkutsk Region is the leader in the Siberian Federal District in the number of murders committed.
The situation with corruption in the region is also unfavorable. The average amount of bribes in our region is also the highest in the Siberian District. Governor of the region Igor Esipovsky expressed his opinion on this matter at the board meeting: "We will pursue in the harshest manner those who try to use their positions among government officials for selfish purposes. Until we break this situation, nothing good awaits us ahead."
However, the prosecutor’s office is focusing on wage payments. Recently, wage arrears have increased sharply. Of 42 territories, there are no debts only in 11 municipal entities. The prosecutor called for measures to eliminate the arrears, as well as for employers to comply with guarantees for workers being laid off due to liquidation and staff reductions.
