At the next "Walks Through Old Irkutsk," they will talk about the history of Zverevskaya Street, now Babushkina Street. As the project organizers, the Young Scientists Club "Alliance," reported, on June 21, one of Irkutsk’s central streets will be discussed by Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Sociology and Social Work at IRNITU, and researcher at the A.M. Sibiryakov Museum of the History of Irkutsk, Natalia Gavrilova. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the intersection of Karl Marx Street and Babushkina Street. Background: in the autumn of 1904, the family of V.I. Vintovkin, later a well-known Irkutsk entrepreneur and member of the city duma, moved from the village of Listvenichnoye into their own newly built house (now 12a Babushkina St.; architect A.I. Kuznetsov) on Zverevskaya Street. The Vintovkin estate included a two-story residential house with wings, two-story storage and utility buildings, a house for the manager’s family, and a one-story brick mini-hotel, becoming one of the notable buildings on this street.
In addition to the Vintovkin estate, at the beginning of the 20th century the street was adorned by the buildings of P.A. Ponomarev’s school and the Volga-Kama Commercial Bank, as well as the houses of the well-known Irkutsk merchants, the Shafigullin brothers, and the heirs of Novitsky. Adjoining Zverevskaya Street were the buildings of the estate of S.R. Rafilzon, also a representative of Irkutsk’s merchant class.
