In Irkutsk Region a contest has been announced for the third youth international expedition to Mongolia, Youth of Baikal to the heroes of Khalkhin Gol. The trip, timed to the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Mongolian victory, will take place from August 9 to 25, 2009 and will bring together only 25 top participants who will represent the region internationally. The contest includes selection, social projects to improve memorial sites, and special training, and the winners will be chosen in the military sports game Thunderstorm. Applications are accepted until March 20, 2009.
“Youth of the Baikal Region – to the Heroes of Khalkhin Gol” is the third international youth expedition to Mongolia, timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet-Mongolian troops in the Khalkhin Gol River area. The Ministry of Physical Culture, Sports and Youth Policy of the Irkutsk Region has announced a regional competition for the right to take part in the expedition, which will take place from August 9 to 25, 2009.According to Deputy Minister for Physical Culture, Sports and Youth Policy Igor Ivanov, the expedition is included in the plan for the nationwide Year of Youth and has received the status of a federal event. The ministry’s task is to form a strong youth team for the expedition. As a result of the selection, only 25 people will be chosen to represent the Irkutsk Region at the international level.
According to the regulations, the competition is held among students of secondary specialized and higher educational institutions, as well as representatives of public organizations. Young men and women aged 18 and over may take part in the competition.
The competition will be held in three stages. The first is the selection of candidates for participation in the expedition. The second is the organization by the participants of social projects aimed at improving memorial sites located on the territory of the Irkutsk Region. The third stage is focused on physical, medical, and special training. To identify the winners, the organizers will hold the military-sports game “Thunderstorm.” Applications for participation in the competition are accepted until March 20, 2009.
Consul of the Consulate General of the Republic of Mongolia in Irkutsk, Mr. Tsolmon, emphasized: “In Mongolia, thorough preparations are currently underway to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet-Mongolian troops in the Khalkhin Gol River area. The President of Mongolia, Nambaryn Enkhbayar, has invited the President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, and the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, to take part in the events.”
