In Irkutsk, after 5.5 years, they decided to return the famous spire to the Angara embankment, which was removed in 2003 and replaced by a monument to Alexander III. According to a poll, 80 percent of residents think the spire suits this place better, and city authorities supported restoring it. This summer they plan to remove the monument to the tsar to once again decorate the embankment with a symbol familiar to Irkutsk residents.
In 2003, the famous spire on the Angara embankment was dismantled, and Tsar Alexander III took its place on the pedestal. Many Irkutsk residents supported the idea of restoring the monument to the tsar, but there were also those who were dissatisfied. Now, when the monument has stood for 5.5 years already, Irkutsk residents nostalgically recall the spire, which was popularly associated with the masculine principle. A group of volunteers conducted a survey on the embankment. It turned out that 80% of respondents believe the spire is much more appropriate at the favorite meeting place of the city’s youth. A report on this was delivered at a meeting of the Ministry of Housing Policy by Anton Sidorov, an activist of the youth movement “Let’s Bring Back the Spire,” and the city authorities supported him. It was decided that this summer the monument to the tsar will be dismantled, and the spire will once again adorn the Irkutsk landscape.
