A Greek language school has opened in Irkutsk at the linguistic university, created on the initiative of the city Greek autonomy. One group of 30 people has been formed so far, but anyone can enroll, and classes will be held twice a week. In addition, the diaspora hopes to establish ties between universities in Greece and Irkutsk for student exchange.
In our city there are many schools and courses where you can learn a foreign language. But the choice of languages is small. Most often it is English, less often German and French. Recently, Chinese has also become popular. But what if you want to learn a rarer language? It turns out that such schools can be found as well. A school where Greek will be taught has opened on the basis of the linguistic university at the initiative of the city’s Greek national-cultural autonomy.
For now, one group of thirty people has been formed. All the students are of Greek origin. However, anyone who wishes can enroll in the school. Classes will be held twice a week. According to the head of the Irkutsk Greek diaspora, the issue of establishing relations between universities in Greece and Irkutsk for student exchange is currently being decided.
Vasily Vasiiladi, president of the Irkutsk City Greek National-Cultural Autonomy:
“We are very happy, because we have been moving toward this for 2 years. That is, we have been working purposefully with the linguistic university. Because it is a specialized university, and in principle we believe that many directions can be pursued here. By working with the university, we really found common ground. That is, we saw the format in which we will work.”
