In the Irkutsk region, new, stricter fishing rules were adopted to protect rare fish species and reduce poaching. Catching seals and sturgeon is banned, and during spawning fishing is allowed only from shore with a two hook rod, without boats or nets. Authorities are also increasing oversight, 17 km of nets have already been seized, and raids will now be held more often in the most troubled areas.

In May of this year, a new set of fishing regulations was adopted in the Irkutsk Region. Now it regulates fishing in the reservoirs of the Irkutsk Region much more strictly. This is related to the population of rare fish species that live in the Angara region.
The rules for recreational and sport fishing and underwater hunting have been tightened. In particular, a year-round ban has been imposed on catching seals and sturgeon species. During the spawning period, fishing is allowed only from the shore and only with a two-hook rod. Fishing from boats and the use of nets are prohibited. Navigation will be restricted in the main fishing areas. In the Katansky District, fishing with a 30-millimeter net will be allowed with a previously obtained permit.
From April 25 to June 25, fishing for grayling, taimen, and lenok is prohibited, and from June 2 to June 15, a ban on pike will be in effect. This is exactly the time when fish begin to spawn. Catching spawning species at this time is punishable by a fine or criminal charges.
In the new fishing law in the Irkutsk Region, special attention is paid to fishing gear. For example, restrictions are being introduced on the use of electric current, explosive and chemical substances, nets, fishing with lights, the use of boats, and the amount of fish caught.
“The bans adopted are necessary, since the amount of fish in the reservoirs has sharply decreased, and the number of poachers is growing,” said Renat Enin. “To date, 17 km of nets have already been confiscated. The most problematic areas are the Ushakovka River, since grayling goes there to spawn, the Irkutsk and Bratsk reservoirs, especially the Osinsky Bay.”
According to Enin, in addition to the legal tightening of the rules, supervision will also be strengthened. At the moment, a unit has been created in Bodaybo. Raids are being carried out jointly with employees of transport services.
