A new stage of the Clean Shores of Baikal environmental project has started on Olkhon. Tourists are offered paper trash bags, and for two filled bags they are promised gifts with the project logo. In the first hour, 140 bags were handed out at the ferry crossing, and participants also receive leaflets on rules of conduct on the shores of Baikal and emergency numbers. In the coming days, a cleanup of three bays near Kharantsy will also take place on the island, where young local residents will join the effort. The project, launched three years ago, has already helped eliminate illegal dumps and install trash bins in popular tourist spots.

In the Olkhonsky District, the next stage of the environmental project “Clean Shores of Baikal” has begun. As the project organizing committee reports, the “Collect two bags of trash, get a gift!” campaign started on July 18 at the p. MRS - Olkhon Island ferry crossing. For 30 days, while the “peak” of the tourist season on Olkhon lasts, volunteers will offer tourists arriving by car and waiting in line for the ferry to take paper trash bags with them for their holiday, so that they can return them, already filled, on the way back. Prizes have been prepared for all campaign participants who hand in two bags of trash: T-shirts and caps bearing the project’s symbols. In the first hour of work, 140 bags were handed out. In addition, all who wish are given leaflets on proper behavior on the shores of the lake, which also list the emergency service phone numbers for the Olkhonsky District.
As part of the “Clean Shores of Baikal” project, a cleanup to remove trash from three bays near the village of Kharantsy will take place on Olkhon Island on July 24–26. Young residents of the Olkhonsky District aged 18 to 30 will take part in the cleanup. Various contests and entertainment events will be held for the participants of the cleanup – the volunteer tent camp will host the festival “The Future Is Ours! Olkhon, uragshaa!”, organized by the district administration.
As a reminder, the long-term environmental project “Clean Shores of Baikal” was launched three years ago on the initiative of the Heineken Baikal Brewery branch. During its implementation, together with the authorities and residents of the protected area, the brewers eliminated illegal dumps in the area of the villages of Kharantsy and Yalga, as well as in the forest area near the ferry crossing on Olkhon Island and six more large dumps on the mainland part of the Little Sea shoreline.
The next stage was the placement of waste collection containers far from recreation bases and settlements, along the routes taken by unorganized tourists and fishermen. Thus, 18 sites were equipped on Olkhon and another ten on the mainland. Trash is removed from there according to a schedule agreed with the district administration. The road to the containers is easy to find thanks to road signs. In 2008, the Heineken Baikal Brewery branch donated a high-traffic garbage truck to the Khuzhir municipal formation (Olkhon Island), making it possible to remove solid household waste from hard-to-reach parts of the island.
For the summer of 2009, the elimination of the largest dumps in the Little Sea water area is planned – in the area of the settlements of Sakhyurta and Sarma.
