At a clothing market on Sofya Perovskaya Street, Irkutsk police caught a pickpocket red handed after she and accomplices stole a wallet from a shopper. The victim from the Bokhansky District got her money back, and a criminal case was opened against the suspect. The detained woman has repeatedly drawn police attention and has several convictions, including for theft and drug trafficking. Police now hope the court will take her long criminal record into account and give her a long sentence.

The day before, at the clothing market on Sofya Perovskaya Street, officers of the operational search unit of the Irkutsk City Department of Internal Affairs caught a pickpocket red-handed at the scene of the crime. There, together with accomplices, she pulled a wallet with money out of a shopper’s bag, the press service of the Main Internal Affairs Directorate for the Irkutsk Region reports. The operatives caught the thief red-handed within seconds.
The victim of the pickpocket was a resident of the Bokhansky District who had come to Irkutsk to shop. The city visitor was surprised when the police told her that a wallet containing a substantial amount of money had been taken from her bag. The stolen wallet was returned to the victim.
The woman has repeatedly come to the attention of law enforcement agencies and has several convictions, not only for theft of others’ property (Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), but also for the distribution of narcotic drugs (Article 228 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
Last year, the Irkutsk woman was granted conditional early release from prison. Already in January of this year, the prison doors opened for her again, and then the offender was released on a recognizance not to leave. However, she once again returned to her old ways.
A criminal case has now been opened. Police officers hope that the court will take into account the suspect’s rich criminal past, and that the next punishment will take the form of a lengthy prison term.
