In Irkutsk, the selection results for the city contest Best Homestead of Irkutsk were summed up, 18 private homeowners applied, and the jury assessed landscaping, greenery, sanitation, and facade design. First place went to a homestead on Dmitry Donskoy Street, where the yard with fountains, flower beds, and a pond with swans was called a real fairy tale. The winners will receive cash prizes and continue in the city contest, which starts on August 23.

18 owners of private homesteads in Irkutsk submitted applications to participate in the city competition. The largest number of those wishing to take part in the competition was in the Pravoberezhny District. 7 homesteads in the Radishchevo, Marata, and Rabocheye suburbs were assessed the day before by members of the competition commission. As the head of the utilities department of the Pravoberezhny District, Semyon Chekashkin, said, in accordance with the competition regulations, the sanitary condition of the territories, landscaping, arrangement of utilities, greening, and, of course, the condition of the house facade and the presence of decorative design were evaluated on a 5-point scale. The goal of the competition is to encourage city residents who take good care of their homesteads, as well as to draw the attention of residents of the private sector to the improvement of their yards.
The beauty and well-kept appearance of the house of Ekaterina Vetrova, located in Kashtakovsky Lane, impressed the jury members. Decorative paving tiles adorn the yard, and around it is an amazing Siberian garden where not only apples grow, but also plums, apricots, and grapes. Plans include planting spruces and flowers in front of the house facade.
“Living in your own house is much better,” says Ekaterina Vetrova. “Here I am my own mistress. However, I agree that the appearance of the streets should look like a single ensemble.”
The members of the organizing committee also inspected homesteads on the streets of the Slavny settlement, as well as on Radishchev, Frunze, Karpinskaya, and Kirpichnaya streets. Today, August 20, they summed up the results and determined the winners.
The first prize went to the family living on Dmitry Donskoy Street. According to the jury members, their homestead can serve as an example for city residents. A neat facade, the area around the house is in order, and fruit trees have been planted. And in the yard it is simply a fairy tale: miniature fountains, well-kept flowerbeds, trimmed lawns, decorative figurines. And the main decoration is a pond with swan figurines.
“I have lived in this house for 58 years. After retiring, I decided to arrange the central yard — you can’t just pour concrete over it, so I planted flowers and put up animal figurines. When I saw the result and the reaction of my children and grandchildren, I decided to continue,” says the owner of the homestead, Olga Leshtaeva. “I take some ideas from magazines, and come up with some myself. It’s not very expensive; the main thing is the desire. Many people can turn a yard into a little fairy tale.”
The second place was awarded to the homestead of Svetlana Petrova, Kirpichnaya Street, Radishchevo suburb. Third place by total points went to Alexander Timofeev, the owner of the house on Karpinskaya Street, Rabocheye suburb. The winners, according to their places, will receive cash prizes of 15, 10, and 5 thousand rubles. All of them become participants in the city competition “The Best Homestead of the City of Irkutsk,” which starts on August 23.
