In Irkutsk, the district contest Best City Homestead was summed up. First place was unanimously awarded to the Kustov family home on Komsomolskaya Street. Their homestead impressed the jury with its neatness, creative design, mosaic panels and thoughtful landscape with lawns, ponds, fountains and rest areas. The winners now face the city stage of the contest, where larger cash prizes will be awarded.

According to the unanimous opinion of the jury members, first place was awarded to the Kustov family home on Komsomolskaya Street. The estate of the retired couple impressed everyone not only with its well-kept appearance, but also with its original, creative approach to landscaping the grounds. On the 15-acre plot there was room not only for vegetable beds, but also for lawns, ponds, fountains, and relaxation areas. And most importantly, each such spot is decorated with mosaic panels made by the owner, Yuri Alekseyevich, himself. He spent a full 8 months working on one of the works that decorated the estate’s inner courtyard.
“I built the house in 2000. My wife, Galina Aleksandrovna, became the designer. She is also the creative inspiration behind my work, and the caretaker of all the greenery. Every spring we plant about 1,000 roots of all kinds of flowers. And every year something changes in the landscape appearance of our estate.”
The family entered the competition by chance. “Like most private-sector estates, we received an invitation from the district administration and decided to give it a try, perhaps becoming an example for others,” says Yuri Kustov. “It turned out not to be in vain.”
“We would like many streets and estates to have such a well-kept appearance, so that it is clean and cozy and every corner becomes a decoration of our city,” comments Vadim Kotlyar, head of the utilities department of the committee for the administration of the Oktyabrsky District of the Irkutsk administration. “Perhaps not everything will work out right away, but the main thing is to strive for it.”
The estates on Verkhnyaya Naberezhnaya and Krasnokazachya Streets took second and third place, respectively.
As a reminder, the first stage of the district competition “The Best Estate in the City of Irkutsk” took place from August 13 to 17. Participants were evaluated on a 5-point scale. The sanitary condition of the territories, landscaping, arrangement of utilities, greening, the condition of the house facade, and the presence of decorative design were taken into account. For 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize places, the owners will receive cash prizes of 15,000 rubles, 10,000 rubles, and 5,000 rubles, respectively.
Starting August 23, the second city stage of the competition will begin, with the winners of the district stage taking part. Three best estates will also be selected among them. The prize for 1st place will be 100,000 rubles, for 2nd place - 70,000 rubles, and for 3rd place - 50,000 rubles.
By the way, in 2011 the winner of the regional competition for the best well-kept estate was the house in the Oktyabrsky District at 32 Sovetskaya Street.
