In the Irkutsk region, a round table Islam against extremism brought together representatives of Muslim communities, authorities and police. Participants discussed countering radicalism, migration and law enforcement issues, and supported the Moscow theological declaration. A resolution was adopted on interfaith peace, fighting Islamophobia and educating youth.
On the eve of this event, a round table on the topic “Islam Against Extremism” was held in the Public Chamber of the Irkutsk Region. The event was attended by representatives of almost all Muslim ethnic groups living in the Angara region: the Tatar-Bashkir, Chechen-Ingush, and Dagestani centers, the Turkmen and Kyrgyz diasporas, the Azerbaijani congress, and the Tajik union. Representatives of government authorities and the regional directorate of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs also took part in the discussion. The meeting was opened by the mufti of the centralized religious organization “Baikal Muftiate,” Farit Mingaleev, who is a member of the Public Council of the regional police. The imam of the Cathedral Mosque presented the participants with the Moscow Theological Declaration, adopted in May of this year at an international conference in the capital by delegates from 23 countries. The document was generally approved, including by Dr. of Cultural Studies Igor Arzumanov, professor at Irkutsk State University, who was present in the hall.
After discussing issues of countering radicalism and extremism, migration and law enforcement order, and touching on internal contradictions, those gathered adopted a resolution.
Its essence was expressed in the development of interfaith peace and harmony in the Irkutsk Region, countering the spread of Islamophobia, as well as consolidating Muslims and educating and enlightening young people. This should be facilitated both by existing projects: Muslim Cinema Days, a youth camp, and a Sunday school, and by those only outlined at the round table. And, of course, “the foundation of everything is family values,” the participants in the discussion agreed.
