In Irkutsk, a new transport scheme is being prepared to help ease traffic jams and improve street flow. Some roads are planned to become one way, and at several intersections lanes are already being added and reconstruction is underway. The authorities also promise major changes to the parking system, from a multilevel lot near the Trade Complex to the countrys first parking meters and tow trucks. Details on which streets and intersections will be affected are in the report.
At the traditional Friday meeting, Viktor Kondrashov told journalists about solving the problems of traffic jams and parking - “Active work is underway to create a new transport scheme for the city of Irkutsk,” said Viktor Kondrashov. “A working group has been formed, which includes city administration employees, representatives of IrSTU and GiprodorNII. In particular, traffic on some streets will be one-way, since it has been proven that one-way traffic increases street capacity by 30% and reduces accident rates.”The mayor emphasized that the Irkutsk administration is already taking measures to reduce congestion. Thus, in Irkutsk, additional traffic lanes have been added at several major intersections. Work is nearing completion at the intersections of Sovetskaya-Aeroflotskaya, Sovetskaya-Baikalskaya, Sovetskaya-Dekabrskikh Sobytiy-Deputatskaya, and Kultukskaya-Krasnoyarskaya streets. A lane divider has been installed at the Maratovsky ring.
“Together with the traffic police, we have identified more than 10 intersections where reconstruction will be carried out next year,” Viktor Kondrashov said.
The mayor also spoke about innovations that will improve the parking situation in the city.
Thus, according to the mayor, the project for reconstructing the parking lot near the Trade Complex is practically ready. The plan is to make it 5-7 levels.
Also, tow trucks will soon begin operating in the regional center. In the area of the former car market in Rabocheye, a land plot of 6 hectares has been designated, where impounded cars will be brought.
“We are the first in the country to plan to install parking meters,” the mayor shared his plans. “Next year, 3-4 parking meters will be installed on the right side of Karl Marx Street. Parking attendants will work there, who will manage the process. The parking fee will be quite affordable - 30 rubles per hour. Parking on the left side of this street is prohibited. Illegally parked cars will be towed away.”
