In Irkutsk under the Safe City program about 2500 surveillance cameras are planned on major streets roads and in crowded places. The system should help control road safety detect dangerous situations at events and solve crimes and camera data will go to a single information center. In 2013 a pilot project may start in the city center and camera installation in courtyards and entrances is also being discussed.

They will appear on major streets and roads of the city, in places where large crowds gather.
According to the city department of internal affairs, Irkutsk needs about 2,500 cameras of various types to ensure order and the safety of residents.
As acting head of the Irkutsk Police Department Dmitry Nikyerov said, the cameras will be a good support in monitoring road safety, identifying dangerous situations at mass events, as well as providing timely assistance in solving crimes in public places. Data from the cameras will be sent to a single information processing center, after which information about violations will be forwarded to the police.
As reported by Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Economics of the Irkutsk city administration Andrey Aksamentov, the installation of surveillance cameras is planned as part of the “Safe City” program, which runs until 2017. Presumably, as early as 2013, a pilot version of the project will be launched in the central part of the city. Technical specifications are currently being worked out: a placement scheme is being developed, and the technical capabilities of surveillance cameras are being studied.
As Andrey Aksamentov reported, the possibility of installing surveillance cameras in courtyards and entrances of apartment buildings is also being discussed.
