The new space in the Window to Asia department takes children from searching for an artefact to its scientific interpretation.
On 10 September 2026 the children’s centre “ARCHAEOLOGY” opened in the Window to Asia department of the Irkutsk Regional Museum of Local History. The project, worth almost 5 million roubles, was carried out with the support of the regional government under the federal project “Family Values and Cultural Infrastructure” of the national project “Family”. The concept was developed together with the museum staff by architects of the St Petersburg company Viking Project.
The space is divided into themed zones, from searching for an artefact to its scientific interpretation: interactive halls, reconstructions and original finds. The museum’s archaeological collections number about 300,000 items, from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age. The centre grew out of the department’s educational programme “About the Ancients — for the Moderns”; plans include a children’s archaeology club, new tours and a school conference, “Irkutsk Archaeology”.
