In Irkutsk, measures were discussed to ease the difficult transport hub in the area of Mayakovsky, Botkin, Dzhambul and 2nd Zheleznodorozhnaya streets. Among the proposals are changing traffic patterns, dedicating lanes for public transport and reconstructing some intersections, and the optimization concept will be presented to deputies in September 2015.
Deputies of the Irkutsk Duma and specialists from the city administration discussed at a meeting of the standing commission on urban planning, architecture, and design the issue of reducing traffic intensity in the area of Mayakovskogo, Botkina, Dzhambula, and 2nd Zheleznodorozhnaya streets.According to Vladimir Malyshev, acting deputy chairman and head of the road activities department of the urban development committee of the administration of the city of Irkutsk, the following measures will help optimize traffic flow at the problematic transport junction:
construction of a channelized intersection of Mayakovskogo, Chelnokova, and Dzhambula streets (the exit to Glazkovsky Bridge);
changing the traffic organization scheme on Sportivny Lane (elimination of traffic light control);
construction of an additional lane on Botkina Street for public transport;
allocation of a public transport lane on Dzhambula Street;
increasing the turning radius at the intersection of Botkina and 2nd Zheleznodorozhnaya streets.
To implement these measures, it will be necessary to develop a traffic organization project and prepare cost estimates. Their cost will be determined by the end of August in order to include these expenses in the draft budget of the city of Irkutsk for 2016.
“For the first time in many years of discussing this problem, in my opinion, you have approached it more constructively and realistically. In general, the plan for a new traffic scheme at this junction should be reasonable and convenient for city residents. It is clear that we will not solve all the issues at once, so a phased approach is needed to address the traffic congestion in this area,” said Deputy Chairman of the Irkutsk City Duma Alexander Khankhalaev.
Deputy of the Irkutsk City Duma Dmitry Zharyy agreed with Alexander Khankhalaev.
As Dmitry Zharyy said, “For the first time I saw a thorough analysis. This is no less important a problem than the Maratovskaya interchange, so I will raise this issue regularly. It is a large-scale one - not for one year - and requires very significant funds.
The Irkutsk administration also proposed considering a change in the public transport route from Gogol Street to Kasyanova Street with access to Glazkovsky Bridge via Profsoyuznaya Street in order to relieve Mayakovskogo Street.
The concept for relieving the transport junction on Botkina, Dzhambula, Mayakovskogo, and 2nd Zheleznodorozhnaya streets will be presented to deputies in September 2015.
