A family day in Irkutsk without long walks: hunt for the babr in the 130th Quarter, catch a planetarium show, stroll on Yunost Island and ride the children’s railway (in the warm season). In the afternoon, visit the icebreaker Angara or the seal aquarium — both easiest by taxi.
About this route
The route keeps walks between stops to 15–20 minutes, with taxis for the furthest points. Mix and match: if there is no suitable planetarium show, spend longer on Yunost Island.
The children’s railway runs in the warm season; the icebreaker museum and the seal aquarium keep their own hours. Check everything by phone or online before you go.
The interactive map is unavailable — below is a sketch of the route and the full written itinerary.
Schematic: stops are joined by straight lines. This is not a walking track — follow the written directions. The map mirrors the list of stops below; all information is available without the map.

The 130th Quarter: find the babr

The sculpture of the babr — a Siberian tiger with a sable in its jaws — stands at the entrance to the quarter. Tell children how a clerical slip made the babr on the coat of arms look like a beaver, and ask them to spot it on the buildings.
Tip
Make a game of it: who can find the most carved animals and birds on the window frames?

The icebreaker Angara
Getting there. By taxi, about 6 km.

The icebreaker was built in England and assembled on Baikal near Listvyanka in 1900. It helped carry passengers and freight across the lake until the Circum-Baikal Railway was finished. Now a museum, it lets you see the engine room and cabins.
Opening hours & tickets: Check the icebreaker museum’s hours in advance.

Practical tips
Transport
On foot in the centre; by taxi to the icebreaker Angara (Solnechny district, about 6 km) and to the seal aquarium (left bank, Glazkovo).
Practical tips
- Bring snacks and water.
- Yunost Island has playgrounds.
- The aquarium and the icebreaker can be split across different days.
Seasonal notes
Best from late May to September, when the children’s railway runs and the island is pleasant. In winter keep to the planetarium, the icebreaker and the aquarium.
Accessibility
Level paths on the island and in the quarter — fine for pushchairs. The icebreaker has steep ladders.
Safety and caring for nature
The embankment and island sit beside a fast river: hold children’s hands near the water.
Budget
Tickets for the planetarium, children’s railway, icebreaker and seal aquarium are separate; allow for two taxi rides.
