Irkutsk’s museums grew out of private collections and the learned societies of the nineteenth century. Rather than a march through every gallery, this route is a map from which to choose two or three museums for the day: the art museum, the museum of local lore, the city history museum, the Decembrists’ houses and the Sukachev estate.
About this route
Every museum on the route is in the centre, linked by walks of 10–25 minutes. Change the order to suit opening days — they differ, and many museums close on Mondays. In the evening you can end a cultural day at the Okhlopkov Drama Theatre on Karl Marx Street.
The interactive map is unavailable — below is a sketch of the route and the full written itinerary.
The route line was calculated on the OpenStreetMap footpath network and has not been checked on the ground by our editors. The map mirrors the list of stops below; all information is available without the map.

Stop 1 · Time here: 90 min
The Sukachev Regional Art Museum
The collection grew from that of Vladimir Sukachev, mayor and patron of the arts. Today the museum holds thousands of works, from Russian painting of the eighteenth to twentieth centuries and Western European art to collections from East Asia. The main building on Lenina Street houses the permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions.

The late nineteenth-century theatre building is one of the finest on Karl Marx Street. If your evening is free, stop at the box office: a performance makes a good end to a cultural day.

The Irkutsk Regional Museum of Local Lore
Getting there. At the end of Karl Marx Street, by Gagarin Boulevard.
One of the oldest museums in Siberia grew from the collections of the Geographical Society’s East Siberian branch. Its historic building, with explorers’ names on the facade, is an exhibit in itself. The museum’s galleries are spread over several buildings in the city.

The Museum of the History of Irkutsk
Getting there. North-east to Frank-Kamenetskogo Street, about 2 km (or by public transport).
The museum tells the story of Irkutsk from stockade to modern city: daily life, trade, fires, floods and the people who shaped the town. A good place to bring together everything you have seen on your walks.
